About product

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III 1:24 – a Studio27 detail set (for Hasegawa kits)

This is not a kit – there is no car in the box. It is an additional detail set from the maker Studio27 in 1:24 scale with which you improve the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III plastic kit from Hasegawa. The basic kit has to be bought separately. The photo-etched parts are cut to the shapes of that particular kit – you will not fit them to a kit from another maker.

The real subject

It was with the Lancer Evo III that Tommi Mäkinen took his first world rally championship title in 1996 – and he then won the drivers' world championship four times in a row. The Lancer Evo and the Subaru Impreza were the great rivals of the 1990s; for rally fans that rivalry means the same as Senna against Prost for Formula 1. Anyone who builds one of those cars sooner or later reaches for the other as well.

Why photo-etched parts and how to work with them

On a rally special the interior is in plain sight – the roll cage, the racing seats, the seat belts, the fire extinguisher and the co-driver's instruments. None of it is hidden under a hood, and that is exactly why photo-etched parts make such a difference: belts made of photo-etched buckles and webbing look like real belts, whereas plastic ones, or missing ones, bring the impression down at once. The same goes for the radiator protection grilles, which on a kit tend to be only a suggested engraving, a solid pancake – out of photo-etched sheet comes a mesh you can really see through. In practice: photo-etched sheet is bent (an etch bender, or a razor blade and tweezers), it is glued with cyanoacrylate glue rather than plastic cement, and the original plastic detail often has to be sanded away – irreversibly. Do not forget the final weathering: a rally car is not supposed to be clean, dust, mud and stone chips on the fenders suit it well. Anyone who wants to go further will find that Studio27 also makes decals for the inner headlight lenses for the Lancer Evo and the Impreza – a detail the kit itself does not have at all.

Who the set is for

  • For owners of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III kit from Hasegawa
  • For more experienced modelers – tweezers, a magnifier, patience
  • For fans of the Mäkinen era and of the duels between the Lancer and the Impreza
  • For builders who are bothered by a plastic pancake instead of a real mesh

An additional detail set, not a model. The basic kit, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a set of additional parts for a kit you already have to own. The Lancer Evo III itself is not included.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III kit from Hasegawa. The photo-etched parts follow the shapes of that particular kit and will not fit models from other makers.

Cyanoacrylate glue, tweezers and ideally an etch bender. Weathering products also come in handy – a rally car looks best dusted and muddied.

Working with photo-etched parts is more demanding: the parts are thin and small and they have to be bent. We recommend it rather to more experienced modelers who already have a steady hand and good light.
