This is not a model and it is not an additional part for a model either. It is a tool: a masking template from the Japanese Studio27 with which you apply the markings on the sidewalls of the tires of Group C racing cars of the 1990s in 1:24 scale. The template is laid on the sidewall of the tire, paint or masking fluid is applied through the cut-out shapes, the template is lifted off – and on the wheel there is a clean, straight and sharp shape.
Because a racing tire is not a black pancake. On its sidewall it carries white markings, and on a model that is enormously conspicuous. Anyone who does without it has four dull black wheels under an otherwise superbly built car. And here is the heart of the matter: wheels are what make a model a model. You can have perfect paint polished to a mirror, but if the wheels are dead, the whole thing slides toward the impression of a toy. Tire markings are a small detail with a disproportionately large impact.
And why a template rather than a brush? Because drawing straight lettering freehand on a curved tire sidewall is practically impossible. The hand shakes, the rubber is round, a matte black surface forgives nothing – and a single slip ruins the whole wheel. A template removes that problem. You do it once, properly, and the same on all four.
The template is not tied to one kit. It is a general-purpose aid for a whole range of Group C cars of that era – today you use it on one prototype, in a year on another, in three years on a third. Buy it once, use it many times. It is an obvious companion for Group C prototypes such as the Nissan R91CP and the Toyotas from the end of the Group C era.
The designation C suggests that the range also has variants A and B for other periods and other markings; if you build cars from the 1980s, look for those.
This is a modeling aid, not a kit. The paints, the masking fluid and the model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
