1:24 Renault 5 Turbo – Grade Up Parts (for Tamiya Kits) is a photo-etched set of additional parts for the Renault 5 Turbo plastic kit from Tamiya. It is NOT a kit — you have to have the basic model, and this set merely gives it the details plastic cannot manage.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a model kit. It is a set of additional parts for the Renault 5 Turbo plastic kit from Tamiya, which you have to own — without it you will not use the set. The additions are made by the Japanese company Studio27, a specialist in refining car models.
Injection-molded plastic has physical limits: it cannot do a truly thin edge or a real open mesh — a grille cast in plastic is a solid wall with an engraved pattern. Thin metal sheet looks the way it should in 1:24 scale, because it really is metal. On a rally car that holds doubly: the interior is on show all the time because of the roll cage and the missing trim. The seats, the belt buckles and the co-driver's instruments are the first thing anyone looks at. A photo-etched buckle with webbing looks like a real belt; a plastic dummy never does.
The Renault 5 Turbo came out of a quite ordinary small hatchback — the Renault 5. The engineers, however, took the engine out of the front and moved it into the middle of the car, behind the seats, added a turbocharger and rear-wheel drive. To fit wide wheels and cooling under the car, it was given enormous blistered rear fenders — a silhouette you will not confuse with anything else. A modest family car became a brutal rally monster.
And it worked: the Renault 5 Turbo won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1981 with Jean Ragnotti at the wheel — on the car's very first world championship start, on narrow mountain roads where the mid-mounted engine gave it an advantage. It was at the same time one of the forerunners of the Group B era, the wildest chapter in the history of rallying.
Photo-etched sheet is bent — without a bender (or at least a ruler and a razor blade) the edges will not be sharp. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal. On some parts the original plastic detail first has to be sanded or cut away, and that step is irreversible — measure twice, cut once. Degrease the metal before painting and cover it with primer, otherwise the paint flakes off. Reckon with the fact that working with photo-etched parts is slow and calls for patience and a steady hand — it is not for an absolute beginner.
The set holds only additional parts for refining the detail. The basic kit, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
