About product

M1088 FMTV, a tractor, 1:35, Trumpeter

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American military M1088 tractor from the FMTV family (Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles) in 1:35 scale. According to the manufacturer the set contains a complete driveline, the engine, the transmission, the transfer case and the suspension units, and masking templates are enclosed for the glazing. Let us be honest: a tractor on its own is not as striking as a tank. Its value lies elsewhere, because it is an ideal basis for a diorama and the logical tractor for a semitrailer, a lowboy or a load. Built on its own it looks rather modest; in a scene with a towed machine, a container or in a convoy it is exactly the piece that makes sense of the whole.

The real subject

The FMTV is an American family of medium tactical trucks that replaced the older fleet of medium military trucks. The M1088 version is a 6x6 tractor with a fifth-wheel coupling, and its job is to pull semitrailers and to carry heavy materiel over long distances. It is powered by a strong diesel engine with an automatic transmission, and the vehicle has full-time all-wheel drive and a central tire inflation system so that it can handle soft ground as well. It is not a combat vehicle: it is the backbone of logistics, without which a modern army does not move, and that is exactly why it turns up with practically every American unit you might want to show in a diorama.

Building and painting tips

Assemble and paint the chassis, the engine and the suspension as a separate block before you seat the cab on it, because otherwise you will not get at the underside. The glazing of the cab is very visible on a tractor, so it pays to really use the masking templates supplied and to spray the frames rather than brush them. Painting: basic military green or desert sand over a primer, then panel washes and, above all, honest weathering of the underside, with dust and mud pigments on the wheels, the wheel arches and the bumper. It is exactly a dusty, well-used tractor that looks convincing; a clean one looks like a toy.

Who the model is for

  • Builders of dioramas, as the tractor for a semitrailer, a lowboy or a load.
  • Collectors of modern American logistics and supply vehicles.
  • Modelers who want a convoy, not just one vehicle in a display case.
  • Anyone interested in a kit with a well rendered chassis and driveline.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles, an American family of medium tactical trucks. The M1088 version is the 6x6 tractor from it, intended to pull semitrailers and to carry heavy materiel.

Let us put it honestly: a tractor on its own is visually more modest than a combat vehicle. It comes out best as part of a diorama or a convoy, or hitched to a semitrailer, a lowboy or a load.

For this set the manufacturer confirms a complete driveline and masking templates for the glazing; how far the cab is worked out does not follow clearly from the data available. The exact content is in the instructions in the box.

The key is the underside: dust and mud pigments on the wheels, the wheel arches and the bumper, together with fine chipping on the edges. A dusty tractor looks convincing, a clean one like a toy.
