This set leaves historical ground and heads into the fantasy genre. The combination of sea robbers with the risen dead has a tradition of its own today in tabletop games, in horror scenes and in collectors' display cases. It has roots in two layers: in the Caribbean legends of the dead who return to serve, and in the sailors' tales of vessels condemned to sail forever without making landfall. It is one of the few figure subjects where a departure from reality is the intention and not a mistake.
The builder gets figures with damaged tissue, with torn clothing and in poses that no historical set offers. That is exactly what makes them rewarding to paint. Decayed cloth, a bone showing through a sleeve or marine growth fused to a shin all allow techniques that would look out of place on a proper uniform: glazes, drybrushing, hard lightening of the edges and transitions of color that stand nowhere in nature side by side like that. It therefore pays to leave the surface deliberately uneven; a casting sanded smooth looks helpless with this subject.
For the undead a cold gray-green base pays off, with warmer tones above it where bone is exposed. The scene tends to be dark, so a single source of light to which all the shadows submit will do it good. The 1:32 scale offers room even for small things such as the links of a chain or shells on a boot, which move the whole impression from a toy to a display case.
