About product

Light cavalry with the lance

The lancers were light cavalry armed with a lance carrying a pennon, whose fluttering was meant to frighten the enemy's horses. The Austrian army raised them against the French formations in a whole series of campaigns from Austerlitz through Wagram to the close of the Napoleonic wars. Characteristic features were the cap with a square top, the short jacket and the lance, which the rider held at the stirrup.

Cavalry is built differently from infantry

A horse with a rider is always an assembly of two parts, and what decides is how they sit together: a figure seated too high spoils the whole scene. It pays to glue the pair dry first and check whether the legs sit against the horse's flanks. A line of riders then works best when it loosens up irregularly, because a real formation on the move never holds a straight line. The pennons can be replaced with thin foil, which is shaped into a wave and looks lighter than a cast part.

Groundwork and colors

A Napoleonic scene needs neither rubble nor trenches; a meadow, a country lane, a low fence and a distant outline are enough. It is precisely the empty space around the riders that emphasizes speed. Give time to the horses' coats: a brown, a chestnut and a black among one line will break up the monotony and are historically in place. Keep the uniform uniform, on the other hand, because the regularity of the dress is what gives the armies of that day their air of discipline.

The tall lance is best glued on only after the rider has been painted, otherwise it gets in the way at every further step.

A longer line of riders is best glued progressively from the back forward, so that the rear pairs have somewhere to give way and do not touch the heads in front of them with their lances.

FAQ

The years 1805 to 1815, that is the main part of the Napoleonic wars from Austerlitz through Wagram to their end.

The lance with a pennon and the cap with a square top. They were light cavalry intended for reconnaissance, pursuit and quick blows.

Dry first. The commonest mistake is a figure seated too high, whose legs do not sit against the animal's flanks, and the whole scene then looks unnatural.

Replacing them with thin foil shaped into a wave has proved itself. A cast pennon tends to be thick at this scale and looks clumsy.
