HEKI water surface film, 80 x 35 cm

This is not a model or a kit but a material for a water surface. The film is transparent and its face carries a fine ripple that looks like the stirring of still water once it is glued down. The manufacturer states an area of 0.28 m² and includes a sheet of blue paper that goes under the film and sets both the shade and the apparent depth of the water. The film is not tied to a single scale, so you can use it on a layout as well as on a diorama.

Use

• lakes, ponds, flooded quarries, harbor basins and calm stretches of streams
• what goes underneath, the enclosed blue paper or your own underpainting, decides the color of the water, so try the shade out before gluing
• put a darker base toward the middle of the surface and a lighter one toward the bank, and the water then looks deeper
• the film is cut with scissors and glued in spots, so that no air bubbles stay under it
• hide the edge under bank vegetation, ballast or applied soil
• the shine of the surface can be calmed with a matte varnish, only try it on an offcut first

Who it is for

For modelers who want to solve a water surface quickly and without pouring two-part resins. It suits a model railway just as well as dioramas with vehicles, aircraft and ships. Compared with poured surfaces the work is dry and reversible and stands up to a scene still in progress, because the film can be taken out and replaced at any time. A beginner will manage a first pond with it at the first try, while an experienced modeler will use it as a base and then add ripples, stones and vegetation to it.
