About product

P-47 D Razorback – equipment for sea-air rescue 1:48 (Tiger Head Models)

A set of 3D-printed parts from the Tiger Head Models brand for models of the P-47 D fighter in the version with a raised fuselage spine in 1:48 scale. The package does not hold a model of the aircraft; it is an accessory for a finished kit that lets you build a machine equipped for search and rescue service over the sea.

The real subject and the role

The P-47 D in the form with a full fuselage spine is an early shape of the well-known American fighter with a radial engine and a massive structure. The cockpit is set into the fuselage and the canopy joins the dorsal decking, so the silhouette differs markedly from the later machines with a teardrop canopy. Besides fighter and attack tasks, machines of this class also found use in searching for crews shot down over the sea. An aircraft with a long range could find survivors quickly and drop them equipment that helped them last until a rescue vessel arrived. It is exactly this less known side of their use that the set opens up to modelers.

Building and painting tips

Parts from 3D printing tend to have very fine detail, but also thin supports and a fine layering of the surface. Remove the supports one at a time with a sharp cutter and never break them off; work with the parts at room temperature, because the material is more brittle in the cold. It is enough to smooth the surface with very fine sanding paper, sand it wet and protect your airways. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, then apply a thin primer; without one, paint holds poorly on printed resin. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Fit the accessories onto a finished and varnished model, so that the fine detail is not flooded with paint.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of the P-47 in 1:48 scale who are looking for an unusual subject
  • Modelers with experience of resin and 3D-printed parts
  • Anyone interested in dioramas on the theme of rescue over the sea
  • Those who want to tell their model apart from the usual fighter schemes

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base model. Glue, paints and a kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is an add-on set of parts that you fit to an already built model of the P-47 D in 1:48 scale.

It marks the early shape of the aircraft with a raised fuselage spine behind the cockpit, as against the later machines with a teardrop canopy and a lowered spine.

Remove the supports one at a time with a sharp cutter, smooth the surface with a very fine abrasive used wet, wash and degrease the parts and apply a thin primer before painting.

Working with printed parts calls for patience and a steady hand. It suits modelers who already have experience of resin accessories.
