A set of cast modeling resin from the Tiger Head Models brand for models of the British four-engine bomber Avro Lancaster in 1:72 scale. The package does not contain a model of the aircraft; these are replacement main landing gear wheels rendered in the form they had on machines parked on an apron and covered with a protective tarpaulin.
The tires of heavy bombers were expensive and sensitive. Sunlight, frost and oil from surrounding vehicles all shortened their life, and so on aircraft that were to stand for a longer time the wheels were covered with a tarpaulin. On a model that makes an unexpectedly rewarding motif: instead of an ordinary rubber wheel you get the softly undulating surface of a textile with folds, ropes and shadows, that is a detail that immediately gives away that an aircraft is not caught in action but at rest between raids. In 1:72 scale such a set is also practical for another reason: on kits of this size the wheels tend to be among the simplest parts, and replacing them raises the level of the whole model incomparably faster than work on an interior nobody will see anyway.
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent disappears, and let them dry properly. On wheels the casting blocks tend to be placed on the contact area, so cut them off with a saw and level the area on sandpaper laid on a flat board; the wheel then stays perpendicular and the model will not stand crooked on its landing gear. Paint the tarpaulin in a lighter tone of canvas, darken the hollows between the folds with a thin glaze and go over the tops of the folds with a dry brush. A little dust pigment near the ground gives the impression that the machine is standing at an airfield and not in a display case. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue).
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base model. Glue, paints and the kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
