About product

RAF wheel chocks 1:72 (Tiger Head Models)

A set of ground equipment from the Tiger Head Models brand in 1:72 scale, according to the name with four big and two small chocks. It is not a model of an airplane, but an accessory that is added to a finished model or to a diorama from the setting of the Royal Air Force in the Second World War.

What a small thing does to a model

In 1:72 scale a chock under a wheel is a really small part, but all the greater is the difference it makes. A model aircraft set on a bare base looks like an exhibit; the same model with chocked wheels, tools scattered about and marks from taxiing looks like an aircraft that will fly in a moment. The chocks also serve a practical role, because they visually connect a wheel with the base and cover the spot where a visible gap or a drop of glue often remains. In a small scale it pays, moreover, to have two sizes available: the bigger chocks under the main landing gear of bombers and the smaller ones for a nose or tail wheel.

Building and painting tips

First wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry. Given their size it pays to work them while still on the casting block: paint them, weather them and only then cut them off and black in the remaining spot with a brush. Suggest the wood with a light brown base, a darker glaze in the hollows and a dry brush across the edges; in this scale, though, do not overdo the contrast, or the chocks will look like a toy. They are glued with super glue in a minimal amount, ideally applied with a pin. At the end add dust pigment in the same shade as the base of the diorama.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of dioramas and aprons in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers of British Second World War aircraft
  • Those interested in airfield ground equipment
  • Those who want to raise the credibility of a finished model with a small detail

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base model. Glue, paints and the kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the name six chocks, four big and two small.

On the contrary. The chocks visually connect a wheel with the base and thanks to them a scene stops looking like an exhibit on display.

Paint and weather them while still on the casting block and cut them off at the very end. Then just touch the remaining spot in with a brush.

Super glue in a minimal amount. It is practical to apply the drop with a pin, otherwise the glue runs out around the part.
