About product

P-47 D Razorback – equipment for sea-air rescue 1:72 (Tiger Head Models)

A set of 3D-printed parts from the Tiger Head Models brand for models of the P-47 D fighter in the version with a raised fuselage spine in 1:72 scale. The package does not hold a model of the aircraft; it is an accessory with which a finished machine is turned into a fighter committed to searching for crews shot down over the sea.

The real subject and the role

The P-47 D version with a full fuselage spine represents an early shape of this massive American fighter with a radial engine. The cockpit is set into the fuselage and the canopy joins the dorsal decking, so the silhouette differs noticeably from the later machines with a teardrop canopy. Besides fighter and attack tasks, machines of this class also found use in rescue service over water, where their range and the speed with which they could be on the spot before vessels were valued. A crew found on the surface needed time above all, and that is exactly what an aircraft with equipment for dropping rescue gear could buy them. A model in such a fit is less usual in 1:72 scale and catches the eye in any collection.

Building and painting tips

Printed parts tend to have very fine detail, but also small supports that have to be removed with care. Release them one at a time with a sharp cutter, never break them, as the material is brittle in the cold. Smooth the surface if needed with a very fine abrasive used wet and with your airways protected. Wash and degrease the parts before painting and apply a thin primer, or paint will hold poorly on printed resin; in 1:72 scale it holds moreover that a heavy layer floods the detail. It is bonded with super glue applied in a minimal amount. Fit the accessories onto a finished and varnished model, ideally after the decals.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of the P-47 in 1:72 scale who are looking for a fresh subject
  • Modelers with experience of 3D-printed and resin parts
  • Anyone interested in the theme of rescue operations over the sea
  • Those who want to tell their model apart from the usual fighter schemes

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base model. Glue, paints and a kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is an add-on set of parts for a model of the P-47 D in 1:72 scale, which you build yourself.

Its cockpit is set into the fuselage and the canopy joins the dorsal decking. The later machines had a lowered spine and a teardrop canopy with a view to the rear.

With a sharp cutter, one at a time, and never by breaking them. The material is brittle in the cold, so work with the parts at room temperature.

Only onto a finished, varnished model, ideally after the decals are applied. The fine parts then do not suffer during further work.
