A stencil for spraying airfield markings onto a concrete surface in 1:144 scale. Intended for bases and dioramas with an apron.
Responsibility details are not available.
The concrete surface of a military or a civil airfield is not a uniform gray. It is divided by the joints between slabs, the guide lines of the taxiways, the outlines of the stands, warning stripes and the numbers of individual positions. It is exactly this graphic work that tells a viewer that a model is not standing on a piece of paper but on an airfield. Drawing by hand with a ruler usually spoils that impression, because in a small scale the width of the lines wavers at once.
The sheet carries cut-out shapes of markings matching 1:144 scale. The builder lays it on a prepared and cured base, fixes it down and sprays paint through the cut-out outlines. The result is markings with sharp edges and the same width along their whole length. Because the stencil does not wear out, the same surface can be extended gradually and further stands added even months later.
The base must be completely dry and free of dust, or the paint will blow under the edge of the stencil. It pays to apply thin layers and rather twice than all at once. If the concrete is to look worn, it is better to let fresh markings harden first and only then weaken them with a sanding sponge or a light dusting. The stencil will serve just as well where the surface is not fully visible, for example under the wing of a parked machine, because a hint of a line running under the fuselage supports the impression that the model stands on a genuinely large surface.
