A set of painting masks for a model of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in 1:144 scale, prepared for the kit of the Zvezda brand.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Dreamliner was the first airliner whose fuselage came about not by riveting sheets but by winding composite sections. The designers thereby gained a stronger shell that takes higher pressure and humidity in the cabin, and they could afford markedly larger windows. Those moreover darken electrically instead of using blinds. The 787-8 version is the shortest of the family and first took to the air in 2009.
The unusually large cabin windows and the deeply set windshield of the flight deck make masking this type a tedious job. Cutting by hand also tempts one to take a few tenths of a millimeter off, which with light corporate liveries is noticed at once. A pre-shaped mask holds the same outline across the whole set.
White aircraft forgive the least, so it pays to lay a light gray base under the top shade, which evens the surface out and reveals imperfections before it is too late. Offer the mask up with dry hands and run a blunt tool along the edge. After spraying, leave it in place for the whole time you work on the neighboring surfaces, so that the glazing does not get dusty. Only after the last sanding and after wiping the dust away does it make sense to take the mask off and inspect the surface against the light.
