The designation R4D belongs to the family of transport machines derived from the civilian Douglas twin, which served in the American forces under several different designations. The name of the set gives two variants; their particular form can be found on the box and in the enclosed instructions.
The machines of this family are among the most widespread transport aircraft of the 20th century: an all-metal low-wing monoplane with two radial engines, a fixed tailwheel and retractable main landing gear. In polar regions they proved themselves supplying remote stations, where their toughness and the ability to operate from improvised surfaces told. Machines deployed in Arctic and Antarctic conditions tended to be given striking high-visibility areas, which made it easier to find an aircraft in the snow.
In 1:144 scale the cleanliness of the surface decides everything - sand the joints of the fuselage halves and the leading edges of the wing smooth, otherwise you will see them under silver paint. Spray metal surfaces onto a smooth gloss surface and vary the shades slightly panel by panel, so that the surface is not deadly uniform. The cockpit glazing is small, and it pays to mask it with strips of masking tape cut with a blade. Apply gloss varnish before the decals and, once they are dry, even the surface out with a semi-matte coat. Apply the high-visibility orange and red areas over a white base, otherwise they will be translucent.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
