About product

The Boeing 747SP as the SOFIA observatory in 1:144 scale

Kit of the Boeing 747SP in the special conversion for the stratospheric observatory for infrared astronomy, known by the abbreviation SOFIA, in 1:144 scale. It is one of the most unusual airliners ever to have flown, and AMP is a brand that focuses on exactly such special machines. The exact contents of the package, the parts count and the range of decal schemes are not stated here.

The real subject

The SP version is the shortened variant of the first wide-body airliner, the Boeing 747, developed for very long routes. The shorter fuselage cut the weight and increased the range, while the aircraft kept the characteristic humped forward section with its raised deck. That is exactly why it became a suitable basis for a flying observatory: it could stay for a long time at high flight levels above most of the water vapor in the atmosphere, which makes infrared observation from the ground impossible. A large mirror telescope was built into the rear of the fuselage and an opening door was made in the side, through which the instrument observed in flight. It is that opening and the accompanying changes to the fuselage that make the model an instantly recognizable piece, which will not blend in with the other airliners in a display case.

Building and painting tips

The model is mostly in light colors, so the surface has to be perfect - fill and sand the fuselage joints carefully, because white paint reveals every unevenness. Apply gloss varnish under the decals, or silvering threatens. The opening for the telescope deserves attention: if you build it in the open position, think in advance about how the inside will look, because it will be visible. Mask the cockpit and the windows before painting. On a large wide-body aircraft in 1:144 it pays to check the balance and, if necessary, weight the nose before the fuselage is glued up. The engine nacelles and the wing leading edges are usually finished last on a model with a gloss finish, so that they are not damaged while handling.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of civil and special-purpose aircraft in 1:144 scale.
  • Anyone interested in airborne carriers of scientific instruments.
  • Modelers looking for a subject outside the usual range.
  • Builders who enjoy a clean surface finish and gloss paint.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the designation of the stratospheric observatory for infrared astronomy - an airborne platform which carried a large telescope to altitudes above most of the atmospheric water vapor. That vapor strongly limits infrared observation from the ground.

The SP version has a markedly shortened fuselage, which cut the weight and extended the range. The characteristic raised forward deck was kept, so the silhouette is recognizable at first glance, but the proportions are different.

That depends on the particular mold, which is not stated here. If the kit allows the open position, count on the inside being visible and prepare a suitable treatment of the interior.

Neither the parts count nor the exact contents of the package are stated here. The figures are given on the packaging and in the enclosed instructions.
