An injection-molded plastic kit of the American F-86F Sabre jet fighter in the F-40 version, in 1:144 scale from Trumpeter. The small scale suits the Sabre well, because the aircraft has an exceptionally clean silhouette and even a tiny model is recognizable at first glance.
The F-86F was the most widespread day fighter version of the Sabre, with the General Electric J47 jet engine. The F-40 subvariant received a wing with extended tips and leading-edge slats, which improved handling at low speeds and in turns; the difference from the earlier machines can be seen precisely in the shape of the wing. The NA suffix in the designation marks neither equipment nor version but the North American plant at Inglewood, while machines from the factory at Columbus carried the suffix NH. The F-40 version reached the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and other allied users on a large scale, so it offers color options far beyond the US Air Force.
The Sabre is most often built in bare metal and that shows in the result: the surface has to be perfectly smooth, because a metal finish emphasizes every scratch. A gloss black base works well, with the metal shade over it, and individual panels can be varied slightly. Do not mask a metal finish with adhesive tape, as it comes off easily. Glue the cockpit in and mask it before spraying; the clear part is tiny in this scale and fogs easily, so use a glue intended for clear parts.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
