A large kit of the Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. F2 medium tank in 1:16 scale. A model to be glued and painted.
Responsibility details are not available.
When Soviet tanks appeared on the Eastern Front with armor the short gun could not cope with, the German Panzer IV medium tank was given a new long 7.5 cm barrel in 1942. The Ausf. F2 designation was carried by precisely this rearmed batch, and it is recognized by the slender barrel with its prominent muzzle brake. A machine originally intended to support infantry suddenly became a full-fledged opponent for armored vehicles, and in this form its appearance settled for the rest of the war.
The 1:16 scale moves the model into a different category. The hull comes out over thirty centimeters long, the parts are robust and detail that would be lost in a small scale is clearly apparent here. Such a size allows work with graded soiling of the running gear, with rendered welds and with elaborate hatches. The model will reach a display case only after gluing, filling and painting, so count on longer work than in the small scales. The size also tempts you to open the hatches and let the viewer look inside, although the extent of the interior fittings differs from kit to kit.
On large hulls it is essential to true up the bottom and the suspension so that the model stands on all its wheels without rocking. The large side surfaces need an even coat, ideally from an airbrush in several thin layers. It pays to glue the long barrel on only after the hull has been sprayed, so that it does not bend during handling. The rich documentation on this type makes it easier to choose the markings and the degree of wear. A small board with simple terrain makes handling easier and the finished piece also photographs better on it.
