Four French LRF-4 rocket launchers

The cylindrical LRF-4 pods from the Matra company are among the typical armament of French combat aircraft, and Reskit has prepared them four at a time for 1:32 scale. The resin print captures the stepped transition at the rear of the pod and the circular mouth, where the individual tubes are discernible. The machine you hang the pods on is sold separately.

The real subject

The pod carries eighteen unguided 68 mm rockets of the SNEB family and can be programmed on the ground to fire singly or in a full salvo. It differs from the more common Type 155 in the design of the gas deflector: the standard pod used to damage the lower surface of the Mirage F1 wing on firing, and that is why this reworked version came about. Besides the fighter mentioned it also appeared under Mirage 2000 machines and under the Jaguar attack aircraft, that is on equipment which went into export all over the world.

How to handle the pods

The mouth of the pod is the most sensitive spot, so protect it when removing the supports and clean out any remains with a round needle file. Darken the inside of the tubes with matte black and then lightly accentuate the edges with a dry brush, so that the metal stands out. The outer casing matches the camouflage of the carrier, so on French machines most often a gray-blue or sand combination. Apply smoke marks around the mouth with pigment at the very end.
