This set of four pieces is a combination of two things at once, the coarse thermally protected casing and the BSU-86 retarding tail unit. For a model that means a concrete saving of work. Anyone who wants the same result from the kit parts has to sand the mold seam down first, then imitate the texture of the casing by spraying and finally thin the retarding fins. Each of those three steps can be spoiled, and all three fall away here.
The Mark 82 is a low-drag bomb of the Mk 80 series in the weight class of around 500 pounds. The thermal protection of the casing reduces the risk during a fire in a confined space, typically in shipboard service. The BSU-86 unit is a second-generation retarding tail that slows the bomb down after a release from low altitude. The combination of both features is common precisely with ordnance operated aboard ships.
The procedure is as with other resin accessories, but with one peculiarity. When sanding the remains of the casting block, watch out not to touch the texture of the casing, because on a smooth area it would then show as a patch without grain. Wash the parts in lukewarm water with a detergent, glue them with cyanoacrylate glue and strengthen the joint with the rack using a wire pin, because resin is heavier than plastic. Paint over a primer and in thinner coats. A dry brush with a paint a shade lighter will bring the texture of the casing out without flooding it.
Reskit makes several similar Mark 82 sets and they differ precisely in the combination of the casing and the tail unit. The exact designation tells them apart, so compare it against the scale as well.
The set is an accessory to a model, not a kit in its own right. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
