The Tomcat could take care of tactical reconnaissance without a single change to the airframe; all it needed was to hang this pod under the fuselage. Reskit offers it as a single complete casting in 1:32 scale including the shaped optical windows for the sensing equipment.
The abbreviation TARPS denotes a tactical airborne reconnaissance pod system. It carried a combination of a frame camera, a panoramic camera and an infrared line scanner, so a single pass was enough to obtain material for intelligence evaluation. From the 1980s the United States Navy replaced older dedicated reconnaissance types with it and deployed it over the Balkans and the Middle East. Only a small fraction of the machines in each carrier air wing was modified to carry it, so it is a striking and at the same time rare store.
The pod is glued to the underside of the fuselage at the place of the rear station. It pays to paint it separately and to attach it only after the decals, because a narrow gap arises beneath it that is hard to reach with a brush. The glass of the sensors can be suggested with a drop of gloss varnish or with a dark layer of higher gloss.
