The subject is the British version of the American Sherman tank known as the Firefly, rearmed with the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun. The model is intended to be glued and painted. Rye Field Model kits tend to be rich in fine parts, so expect careful work. Rye Field Model states the exact package contents (photo-etched parts, marking options, type of tracks) on the box and in the enclosed instructions.
During the Second World War the British army realized that the standard Sherman and its gun were not enough against more heavily armored German vehicles. The solution was to fit the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun, with its long barrel and high muzzle velocity, into a modified Sherman turret. This is how the Firefly came about, at the time one of the few Allied tanks able to destroy even heavy German tanks such as the Tiger from the front. The long gun barrel is the unmistakable recognition feature of this version. The Firefly played a significant part from the Normandy landings to the end of the war in Europe.
Start with the running gear and the suspension; with armored vehicles it pays to finish and paint the lower part before the hull and turret are joined for good. Glue the plastic with thin cement and separate the fine parts carefully. Apply a primer before painting and spray the base shade with an airbrush. Straighten the long barrel of the main gun so that it is perfectly true, as it is the most conspicuous element of the model. Create the weathering with a dark wash in the recesses and around the rivets, then add dust and mud effects to the running gear and the lower areas with pigments.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
