Cobblestones in 1:35 scale

A cobbled street is the most common base for military as well as civilian dioramas and at the same time the first thing a viewer judges subconsciously. This set from Vallejo supplies cobblestones for creating a paved surface in 1:35 scale - from them you build a roadway, a yard or a stretch of sidewalk exactly according to the layout of your scene. It is neither a model nor a kit, but material for building a base.

Bedding and layout

The stones are best set into a layer of filler or modeling compound applied to the base, which you press them into while it is still pliable. That is precisely the time for credible unevenness: a slightly raised stone, a sunken place by the curb, a wedge-shaped narrowing of a row in a curve. Paving laid in a perfect grid looks like a product, not like a street. If a tracked vehicle passes through the scene, count on a rutted track and a few broken-out stones.

Painting and the joints

• Do the base over the whole area in one color, and only then repaint individual stones at random into warmer and cooler shades - three or four variants are enough.
• The joints are taken care of by a dark pin wash: let it soak freely into the gaps and draw the excess off the surface of the stones.
• Dust and mud settle at the edges and by the curbs, while the middle of the roadway tends to be polished by traffic.
• Before applying the wash, test how absorbent the base is on a small piece; on an absorbent material the paint spreads faster than you expect.
• Mask the transition from the paving to the surrounding terrain with a fine material and pigment; a sharp edge gives away the edge of the set.
