A replacement barrel for a model of the German 5 cm Pak 38 anti-tank gun in 1:35 scale, made by turning. It is not a kit but an accessory that is installed in place of the plastic part from the box. The manufacturer is the Polish company MASTER, whose main line of work is precisely turned barrels and small metal parts.
An injection-molded plastic part is made from two halves, so it carries a mold parting line along its whole length and the muzzle is blanked off. A turned piece has the bore finished from the factory, it is concentric and straight and it will not bend or twist while you handle it, which is no small thing on the long slender barrel of a gun. It also removes the risk of drifting off the axis while drilling out the muzzle and leaving the barrel looking crooked.
The Pak 38 was a German towed anti-tank gun of 50 mm caliber from the Second World War, designed as a light weapon with splitting trails and a low shield. It replaced the older 37 mm caliber, which was no longer enough against growing armor. It is the long barrel with its muzzle brake that is the most striking element of the whole silhouette, which is why any inaccuracy shows there most of all.
Cut the plastic barrel off and clean up the seat in the breech so that the metal part slides in without force. Bond it with thick super glue or with epoxy, which gives you time to align the axis, and check the barrel from several sides while it sets. Degrease the surface before painting and use a primer suited to metal. An alternative to paint is bluing, after which the metal looks like metal and will even take dry-brushed edges.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as a replacement part for a model. Paints, glue and the base kit are not included in the package.
