Detail parts for military vehicle models turn an ordinary tank or armoured car kit into a cabinet piece. Gathered here are turned metal barrels, workable tracks, weighted road wheels, tow cables, photo-etched parts, decals, paint masks and rivets in sizes from 1:72 to 1:16. Most of these parts are designed around a specific kit, so they fit without surgery. Below: what to choose by, so that a part matches your boxing exactly, and what each type of part actually does for a model.
Injection moulding has limits. A barrel carries a parting seam, kit tracks tend to be stiff rubber loops with no sag, and tyres sit on the ground unnaturally round. Detail parts solve those compromises. A turned barrel is perfectly circular with a hollowed muzzle, individual track links drape the way they do on a real tank, and resin wheels have a flat and a bulge precisely where the weight of the machine puts them. Add fine tool clamps in brass, or zimmerit texture that would be slow going in putty, and the difference shows across the room.
Most of these parts are made to suit one kit, so look in the title for the scale, the vehicle type and often the boxing the part was designed for. A 1:35 Tiger I track run will not transfer to another size.
Resin carries the finest shape detail, photo-etched brass excels at grilles and handles, turned metal belongs to barrels, and 3D print now manages complete runs of track links. Glue metal and resin with cyanoacrylate, never with polystyrene cement.
Start with a tow cable or a metal barrel; either is a few minutes' work. Complete upgrade sets with etched frets and interiors are better left until tweezers feel natural in your hand.
Once the detail is in place, patina brings the machine to life, and a muddy lower hull or dust along the mudguards is the work of weathering pigments.
