About product

Sd.Kfz. 135/1 (15 cm sFH 13/1 on the Lorraine chassis) plus a 50 t railroad car, 1:35, a Zimi Model kit

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Zimi Model. The package is unusually rich: it contains two 15 cm sFH 13/1 (Sf) auf Gw. Lr.S.(f) self-propelled howitzers, that is the Sd.Kfz. 135/1, and with them a German SSy45 railroad flatcar with a 50 ton capacity, hence the 3 in 1 designation, three models in one box. The car is the main draw: heavy equipment did not move to the front under its own power but loaded on railroad flatcars, and this kit lets you build exactly such a scene, the gun (or both) on the car, with tie-down chains and chocks. The package contains photo-etched parts, tracks made of individual links and decals.

The real subject

After the fall of France in 1940 the Germans captured an enormous amount of French equipment and systematically converted it. The Lorraine 37L was a French armored tracked supply tractor, and the Germans turned it into a chassis for improvised self-propelled guns. The 15 cm sFH 13/1 version carried a heavy 150 mm howitzer in an open armored superstructure. Roughly 94 were built, and they were used among other places in North Africa and later in France. It is a typical example of German improvisation: an old gun, a captured chassis, and suddenly the artillery has a mobile weapon. The designation Sd.Kfz. 135/1 is its official German number.

Building and painting tips

Work in sections: first the running gear and the tracks (glue the individual links in batches and let them dry on the wheels with the right sag), then the superstructure with the howitzer; paint and weather the inside of the open superstructure before you close it, because it is visible from outside. The car is a separate build: the floor, the bogies and the buffers. The wood of the floor deserves brown shades, a wash and drybrushing; the vehicles deserve a primer, a wash in the recesses and dust or mud pigments on the tracks. For a diorama a piece of track is then enough and the scene tells itself.

Who the model is for

  • Diorama builders; equipment loaded on a railroad car is a rewarding and striking subject
  • Fans of German improvisation and captured equipment (Beutepanzer)
  • Modelers who want to build three models from one box
  • More experienced modelers; individual track links and photo-etch call for patience

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. In the box there is a German SSy45 flatcar with a 50 ton capacity. The gun (or both) can be loaded onto it, which is exactly how heavy equipment was moved.

It refers to three models in one box: two Sd.Kfz. 135/1 self-propelled howitzers and one railroad flatcar. The build options and the ways of arranging a scene grow markedly with it.

An improvised self-propelled gun. After the fall of France the Germans captured French Lorraine 37L tracked tractors and mounted a heavy 150 mm sFH 13 howitzer on them in an open armored superstructure. Around 94 were built, and the German designation was Sd.Kfz. 135/1.

Individual links. The package also contains photo-etched parts and decals.
