Wallpapers for the interior of a diorama

A set of four sheets printed with domestic wallpapers in 1:35 scale. They serve to cover walls where the inside of a building is visible and where a bare surface would give away that it is a stage set.

Why the pattern decides the impression

A viewer recognizes an inhabited interior by small things, and the pattern on the wall is the most conspicuous of them. It also establishes the size: a stripe or a flower in the wrong size will enlarge or shrink a scene at once, even when everything else is right. In 1:35 scale a wall two and a half meters high comes out at roughly seven centimeters and a room three meters wide at barely nine, so the pattern is examined close up and will stand only a little inaccuracy.

What four sheets get you

Four sheets leave room for a trial and for a correction. It pays to cover one wall as a test, look at it from the distance at which the scene will be displayed, and only then cut the rest. The offcuts come in useful for narrow strips in the corners, for patches and for the piece of wallpaper visible in broken masonry.

Gluing tips

• Cover the walls before you stand furniture and figures in the scene.
• Divide the sheets with a sharp blade along a metal ruler; scissors will not hold a straight edge.
• Choose the glue according to the material of the sheets and test it on an offcut; an unsuitable one will make the printing ripple or soak through.
• Press the glued sheet down from the center toward the edges and let it dry under a light weight.
• Finally even the surface out with a matte clear coat; a glossy reflection off the surface gives a stage set away.

The set suits builders of dioramas and display scenes in 1:35 scale who want their walls finished faster than they could paint them. The model, figures, furniture, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
