This road segment from the Royal Model brand is cast in resin and measures approximately 24 x 18 centimeters. The area is large enough for an armored vehicle in 1:35 to stand on it whole, and it still fits an ordinary display case.
A finished road surface takes care of the most laborious part of a scene, namely the surface. The texture of the paving, the curbs and the edge grooves are all cast in one go, so carving stones into putty and watching the regularity of the joints falls away. The appearance matches southern European building; it fits the campaign on the Apennine peninsula in the years 1943 to 1945 exactly, but it will also serve as a town street anywhere in the Mediterranean. For the same subject the maker also makes a matching sidewalk and a house frontage, so the area can be extended.
Free the resin of grease and cover it with a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth casting. Stone comes to life if several different shades of the individual setts are laid over a gray base and the area is then unified with a thin dark coat that runs into the joints. Wheels leave lighter traces behind them, suggested by fine pigments along the axes of travel. It is a good idea to disguise the cut at the edge of the segment with earth or grass.
The segment is supplied without paints, and the modeler tunes the final shade themselves.
