A plastic kit of the Japanese Type 87 self-propelled anti-aircraft system in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. It is an injection-molded kit of a tracked vehicle with a rotating turret, gun anti-aircraft armament and radar equipment.
The Type 87 is a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The turret carries a pair of 35 mm Oerlikon automatic cannons together with a search and tracking radar that folds down for travel. The chassis is derived from the Type 74 tank, so the vehicle can keep up with tank units across country; the hull and the chassis were supplied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the weapon section by Japan Steel Works. The vehicle entered service in the second half of the 1980s and protects positions and columns against low-flying targets. The combination of a tracked chassis, a radar and a pair of rapid-firing cannons makes it the Japanese counterpart of the European anti-aircraft vehicles of the same generation.
Finish the running gear and the lower hull before you fit the fenders and the superstructures - afterwards they are hard to get at. Leave the radar antennas and the fine turret parts to the very end so that they do not break off while you handle the model. Japanese vehicles wear a two-color camouflage in brown and dark green with fairly sharp edges, so masking putty or a stencil pays off. Weather the tracks and the lower areas with a dark wash and dust pigments, and keep the turret cleaner so that the contrast stands out.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
