An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese Type 89 infantry fighting vehicle, which serves with the Ground Self-Defense Force. The abbreviation IFV stands for infantry fighting vehicle, that is a tracked machine that carried a squad of soldiers and at the same time supported them with its own armament. The model is released by Trumpeter in 1:35 scale. Japanese postwar equipment is far more thinly represented among models than American or European, so this makes an interesting addition to a collection.
The Type 89 was developed in Japan and adopted at the end of the nineteen eighties as the first true infantry fighting vehicle of the Japanese ground forces. The turret carries a 35 millimeter automatic cannon, and launch containers for anti-tank guided missiles of domestic design are mounted on the turret sides. At the rear is a troop compartment for an infantry squad. The vehicle was more expensive than the imported alternatives, which is why it was built in fairly small numbers and serves with selected units only.
Finish and paint the running gear and the lower hull before you close the hull up. Glue the missile launch containers on the turret sides last, so that they do not break off while you handle the model. Japanese equipment carries a characteristic two-color camouflage in dark green and brown with hard edges. It is best done with masking putty or with masks, which give you sharp edges. Add a dark wash into the gaps and fine dust pigments on the underside.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
