A plastic kit in 1:35 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer MiniArt. The subject is the so-called ball tank, a single-seat vehicle of spherical shape that ranks among the strangest designs of the Second World War. The set belongs to the manufacturer's range with a full interior: the internal equipment is modeled, the hatch can be built open or closed, and the box holds clear parts, photo-etched parts and decals for several marking options. The finished model is tiny at that, measuring around five centimeters.
The ball tank is a vehicle about which little is known. A single example survives, which came into a collection as war booty and is displayed in a museum. It was a single-seat vehicle with a spherical body moving on two wide running surfaces and with a hinged rear guide wheel, probably meant for observation or for signals duties. Its origin, its maker and any real combat use are not reliably documented, and even the designation under which the vehicle is commonly listed is of later date. It is precisely this mystery that makes the subject a favorite among modelers.
Paint, pick out and dust the interior before you close the body, because on a vehicle this small it can really only be seen through the hatch. Build the hatch open, therefore, or the work will go to waste. A spherical shape gives away every imperfect joint, so give attention to sanding and, if needed, to filling the seam. Keep the painting restrained; on a vehicle with no documented service an overdone patina looks unconvincing. Given the size of the model it is worth displaying it on a small base with a figure or an object that gives the viewer a sense of scale.
