A set of plastic running gear parts with VVSS suspension for the American Stuart series of light tanks in 1:35 scale from AFV Club. It is not a vehicle model but an add-on to an already built kit. The manufacturer intended it not only for the M3 Stuart but also for the M5 Stuart and the M8 Scott self-propelled howitzer, which stand on the same chassis.
VVSS, that is vertical volute spring suspension, was an American system in which a pair of road wheels bears on a vertical spring housed in a casting hung on the side of the hull. On Stuart light tanks this assembly is very clearly visible from the side and forms a characteristic part of the vehicle outline. Older kits tend to have the suspension simplified or molded into a single piece, whereas a separate set allows the parts their correct shapes, recesses and parting gaps. The same running gear appears on the M5 Stuart and on the M8 Scott as well.
Deburr the individual suspension parts and sand the parting lines down. Assemble the whole unit dry first and try seating it on the hull before you glue anything: with running gear it is decisive that both sides are at the same height, otherwise the finished vehicle sits crooked. Paint the running gear before you seat the track, because once the track is in place you can no longer reach the inner surfaces. Dust and mud effects in the recesses of the suspension castings will give the model its scale.
This is an add-on set, not a vehicle model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
