Barbed wire is not decoration, it is a boundary. That is exactly where its strength in a diorama lies: the moment it appears, the viewer immediately knows where one may and may not go, and the scene gains tension without a single extra figure. The designation of a modern version in its second form refers to the more recent shape of obstacle, the kind that turns up at a guarded perimeter, a checkpoint or the boundary of a base, not to the dense obstacle of trench warfare.
The combination is unusual and well thought out at the same time. The barbs are carried on a photo-etched metal sheet, which holds its shape and will take being stretched between supporting points, whereas the posts are of wood, so they have their own surface grain and do not look like a casting. Metal and wood side by side then react differently to paint, which does the finished obstacle good.
It works best at the edge of a base, where it leads the viewer into the depth of the scene, or across the terrain as a reminder that somebody is controlling the space. Makeshift patches, sagging runs and trampled grass at the foot of the posts will turn the obstacle into something that has been standing there for a while.
