The injection-molded plastic kit from the manufacturer Dragon in 1:35 scale captures an unusual late-war concept: mounting the narrow Schmalturm turret from the Panther Ausf.F tank on the hull of the Pz.Kpfw.IV medium tank. The model combines Dragon's proven parts from the Panzer IV and the Panther, with the upper part of the hull newly modified so that the turret seats on it. The package contains plastic sprues, photo-etched parts and decals. It is a kit for more experienced modelers with an interest in German armored hardware and in so-called what-if projects.
The idea of seating the narrow Schmalturm turret with the gun of 7.5 cm KwK.42 L/70 caliber on the chassis of the Panzer IV appeared at the close of 1944. The combination was to give the older Panzer IV the more powerful gun of the Panther, but it soon turned out that the turret would overload the chassis, and the intention was abandoned. The vehicle thus remained merely a project, which makes it a rewarding subject for collectors of prototype and paper hardware.
Assemble and paint the running gear and the interior before you close the hull up, as they are harder to reach later. Glue the parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic and the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate. For an even camouflage, an airbrush and a light base work well. You will create the patina with a dark wash in the engraved lines and with dust or mud pigments on the lower areas and the running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
