German direction boards, signposts and unit markings for the western area in the Second World War. Printed in color on a stiff sheet of 19 x 13 cm, from which the individual boards are cut out. Intended for 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Wehrmacht built its own signposting network everywhere it arrived. Angular lettering on a white ground, black arrows with the names of towns, field post boards and small boards with unit code markings stood at junctions in such numbers that the posts were covered with signs from top to bottom. It is exactly this density that tells a viewer he is looking at a German-administered rear area, and in a model nothing else will do instead.
The carrier is a stiff paper sheet measuring 19 x 13 cm with a color print. The boards are cut out with a sharp knife and glued to supports the builder prepares himself, most often from round section or a thin batten. The choice of support decides the result more than the print itself: a slender post looks convincing at this scale, while a thick one undoes the effect.
A color print will take light toning with a dry brush, which tempers the excessive freshness of the white. Once cut out, it is a good idea to back the paper with thin plastic if the sign is to stand on its own and carry its own weight. Everything is drawn for 1:35 scale. At a single junction it pays to mix boards of different ages and different degrees of damage, because a rear-area signposting network did not appear all at once but grew month by month.
