About product

ZSU-23-4 Shilka 1:35 — Meng plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the ZSU-23-4 Shilka self-propelled anti-aircraft system in 1:35 scale from Meng. According to the manufacturer, four different service versions of the vehicle can be built from the single box. The kit has working torsion-bar suspension, individual workable track links, a well-worked radar that can be built either stowed or in the operating position, and gun barrels that elevate together. It includes photo-etched parts, clear parts for the periscopes and optics, detail in the driver's compartment, an ammunition feed magazine and a driver figure.

The real subject

The ZSU-23-4 is a Soviet tracked anti-aircraft system that entered service in the 1960s. It carries four 23 mm automatic cannon with liquid cooling, directed by an on-board radar — the characteristic rotating antenna above the turret. The combined rate of fire of all four barrels exceeds 3000 rounds per minute, which made the vehicle an exceptionally effective weapon against low-flying targets. In practice it proved just as destructive against ground targets — against infantry, unprotected positions and light vehicles, where the density of fire simply shreds everything in the field of view. It was in exactly this role that the Shilka was used in a number of conflicts. The Shilka also served with the Czechoslovak People's Army, which introduced it in the 1970s in the form of an anti-aircraft battalion, that is on the order of tens of vehicles, and machines of this type are still being modernized in Slovakia today.

Building and painting tips

Begin the build with the running gear and the driver's compartment interior — once the hull is closed there is no access to it. It is a good idea to assemble and paint the workable track links off the model and to fit them only after the base color has been sprayed. Use liquid cement for plastic and glue the photo-etch with super glue. Apply a primer before painting, spray the base shade with an airbrush, and then comes the weathering: brown and gray washes into the hull details, dry brushing on the edges and finally pigments for dust and mud in the running gear. Fit the radar and the fine antennas at the very end.

Who the model is for

  • modelers with experience of building tracked vehicles and individual track links
  • collectors of Soviet and Eastern Cold War armor
  • anyone interested in the equipment of the Czechoslovak army and the Warsaw Pact forces
  • fans of unusual machines — an anti-aircraft system is a rewarding subject for a diorama as well

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The kit contains individual workable track links, not rubber tracks. Assembly takes patience, but the result is markedly more realistic — the track can be given a natural sag.

Yes. The Czechoslovak People's Army introduced the ZSU-23-4 in the 1970s in an anti-aircraft battalion, that is on the order of tens of vehicles. Modernized machines of this type still appear in Slovak service today.

Thanks to the enormous rate of fire of its four 23 mm cannon it proved very effective against ground targets as well — infantry, light vehicles and unprotected positions. In a number of conflicts it was used in exactly that way.

Rather not. The individual track links, the photo-etch and the fine radar parts assume at least some experience of building armor.
