On a building in a diorama, the roof decides the overall impression before the masonry does. This set handles it with paper that is laser cut and already colored a light gray shade, so it is laid in layers like real roofing and does not have to be sprayed beforehand. The area you will cover is roughly sixteen by ten centimeters.
A faded gray is read by the eye as older roofing, dried out by the sun on the south side. It therefore suits a farm building, a shed, a summer annex or a house in rural surroundings, where the building is meant to look lived in rather than new. In a scene a light area behaves like a point of light: it draws the eye upwards, so there has to be something beneath it to hold that look - an open door, a figure in a window, a roof truss showing through.
Avoid, by contrast, letting paint run heavily into the joints - with paper the change is irreversible and a wave once created can no longer be straightened out. Likewise, do not hurry with bending over the ridge: the material breaks along the grain and a break is clearly visible on a finished roof.
The set contains the roofing, not the roof structure or a whole building.
