The dark gray version of the paper roof covering for 1:35. The material is pre-colored and laser cut, and is enough for an area of roughly sixteen by ten centimeters.

A dark surface above presses a scene down and makes it more serious. That is exactly why this version suits different places from the light one: a town house, a workshop building, a building after rain, or an autumn and winter scene where the sky above the model is meant to feel heavy. The material is pre-colored paper, which the manufacturer cuts with a laser, so the shape of the individual courses is done and all you have to do is lay them.
A dark area absorbs light and therefore needs a counterweight. A light facade, a white gable, a limewashed base course or a brightly lit yard beneath the eaves all work well. Without that contrast the building merges with the base and the structure you spent the most time on visually disappears. The second proven trick is to leave part of the covering missing: under the exposed place the roof truss stands out and the viewer gets a look inside.
Paper will take only a limited amount of moisture, so contact gluing over smaller sections and checking the flatness as you go both work well. Do the shading rather with powder pigment or with heavily thinned paint applied dry; a saturated glaze kills the dark shade and the joints disappear in it. It is a good idea to cover the cut edges at the ridge with a strip, because on a dark material the light cut of the paper gives itself away at once.
It is also worth noting that a dark roof will take more dirt than a light one. A deposit of soot around the chimney, a green tint on the north side or fallen needles in a valley will only be lost on it if you apply them too cautiously.
The package contains only the covering, not the building itself or its structure.
