About product

StuH 42 Ausf. G, mid production July to October 1943, 1:35 MiniArt

A plastic kit of the German StuH 42 Ausf. G assault howitzer in 1:35 scale by MiniArt. According to the name it is tied to a particular production period, that is to the mid series from July to October 1943. That is not a formality: on vehicles built on the StuG III chassis the shape of the hull, the superstructure and the external fittings changed practically every few months, so the date in the name tells the modeler which stage of the vehicle he will be building and which period photographs match it.

The real subject

The Sturmhaubitze 42 came about as a complement to the StuG III assault gun. While the StuG III carried a flat-trajectory gun intended mainly against armor, the StuH 42 received a 10.5 cm howitzer in the same low superstructure. The point was to give the assault gun battalions back the ability to deal effectively with field fortifications, machine gun nests and dug-in infantry, against which antitank ammunition was not enough. The vehicles served with assault gun battalions on the Eastern and Western Fronts alike, and at first glance they differ from their siblings above all in the gun barrel and its muzzle.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the running gear and the inside of the superstructure before you close the hull up, otherwise you will no longer reach them. Leave the wheels and tracks loose for the time being and fit them only after the base shade has been sprayed, and you will save yourself the masking. The surface of a 1943 vehicle is well captured by a combination of filters, a wash in the recesses and pigments for dust and mud; apply the pigments from the top down and finish at the running gear, which in practice was the dirtiest part of all.

Who the model is for

FAQ

It is based on the same chassis and the same low superstructure, but instead of a flat-trajectory gun it carries a 10.5 cm howitzer. It was meant mainly against fortifications and infantry, not against armor.

It defines a particular production period of the real subject. The shape of these vehicles changed often during the war, so the date says which stage the model captures.

It is a military vehicle in 1:35 scale with finely divided parts, so it suits rather a modeler who has already built a kit or two. A patient beginner will manage it, though.

They are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and the glue and paints have to be bought separately.
