About product

T-72B3 1:35, a Meng plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the T-72B3 main battle tank in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Meng. The kit builds on modern tooling: working torsion bar suspension, individual movable track links with a double pin (they go together more easily than on older kits), movable crew hatches, clear parts for all the optics and fine photo-etched parts. Decals for several marking options are included. Slide-mold technology allows crisp detail on the barrel, the applique armor and the tools on the hull.

The real subject

The T-72B3 is a Russian modernization of the T-72B tank, introduced from the beginning of the 2010s. It takes in a new 125 mm gun, a modern gunner's sight with thermal imaging and a rangefinding channel and a monitor for the commander, an improved autoloader and additional explosive reactive armor on the front of the hull and the turret. Power comes from a diesel engine of roughly 840 horsepower. The aim of the modernization was to bring a large number of older machines from army stores up to the level of newer types at a fraction of the cost of a new tank.

The T-72 has a particular significance in Czechoslovakia: the tank was built there under license, with the assembly split between Martin (the hull) and Dubnica nad Vahom (the turret), and the machines served with the Czechoslovak People's Army and later with the Czech Army, which developed modernized versions of its own. Mind the confusion, though: the B3 version is a Russian modernization, not a Czechoslovak or Czech one, and it has nothing to do with the domestic upgrades of the T-72.

Building and painting tips

Work from the running gear: assemble and paint the wheels, the torsion bars and the tracks separately, away from the model. The track links go on only after the base coat. Glue the photo-etch (the grilles and the skirts above all) with super glue and the plastic parts with thin cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting, spray the base with an airbrush and modulate the shades with lighter touches on the upper surfaces. Build the weathering in layers: a wash into the scribed lines, a filter to even the tone out, a dry brush on the edges and pigments for mud and dust effects in the running gear and on the fenders.

Who the model is for

  • modelers with experience of tracked vehicles and individual track links
  • collectors of modern Russian and eastern armored vehicles
  • anyone interested in the T-72 and its Czechoslovak license line
  • modelers who want to build vehicles from current conflicts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The T-72 was built there under license, with the hulls in Martin and the turrets in Dubnica nad Vahom, and it served with the Czechoslovak People's Army and with the Czech Army. The B3 version in this box, however, is a Russian modernization, not a Czechoslovak upgrade.

The modernization brought a new 125 mm gun, a modern sight with thermal imaging and a rangefinder, a monitor for the commander, an improved autoloader and additional explosive reactive armor on the front of the hull and the turret.

The kit has individual movable track links with a double pin. Meng designed them to go together faster than classic links; the finished track is movable and can be given a realistic sag.

It is a kit of medium difficulty. The individual track links and the photo-etch call for patience, but the construction is logical and the parts fit well, so as a second or third tank the model is a good choice.
