About product

The Tiger I of early production in 1:35 scale (Rye Field Model)

A kit of the German Tiger I heavy tank in the early production standard. The boxing is issued as one particular vehicle with turret number 504, associated with the commander Michael Wittmann, so both the instructions and the markings are aimed at a single machine. Rye Field Model is a Chinese maker that concentrates on armored vehicles with a high level of detail. The model comes as a classic plastic kit; it is assembled and painted.

The real subject

The Tiger I, officially designated Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. E, was a German heavy tank introduced in 1942. Its main armament was an 8.8 cm gun with a barrel 56 calibers long, supplemented by machine guns. A characteristic feature was the running gear with interleaved road wheels, which gave low ground pressure but complicated maintenance and froze up in winter. Because of its width, narrower tracks were fitted for rail transport and the outer row of wheels was removed; the wide combat tracks were used in action. Vehicles of early production can be recognized by the drum-shaped commander's cupola with vision slits, the set of air filters at the rear and several details of the hull that changed in the later batches. The first machines were powered by a Maybach engine of smaller displacement, which was later replaced by a more powerful variant.

Building and painting tips

The running gear will take the most time. Glue the wheels in layers and watch that they stay in plane, otherwise the model will not sit down on its tracks. If the set has an interior, paint and shade it before you close the hull, because afterwards you will not get inside. Build the gun and the turret separately from the hull. Choose the color scheme according to the instructions in the box; on early production vehicles the period finish changed over time, so it pays to stick to the subject the instructions offer. After the base color come gloss varnish under the decals, a dark wash into the pressings and rivets, fine chipping on the edges and finally dust and mud on the running gear with pigments.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of German armored vehicles of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • modelers who want to build one particular historical vehicle, markings included
  • builders with experience of more demanding running gear and small parts
  • anyone interested in models with a high level of detail

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rye Field Model issues models both with and without an interior. The particular standard of this box is given on the box and in the instructions.

Mainly in details of the superstructure and the turret. Early vehicles had the drum-shaped commander's cupola with vision slits, differently arranged filters at the rear and further small details of the hull that changed during production.

Rather not. The interleaved road wheels and the large number of small parts call for patience and a certain amount of practice. We recommend a simpler kit to a beginner.

They are not. The package holds plastic parts and instructions; the rest of the modeling material is bought separately.
