An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from AK Interactive. It captures the legendary East German small car Trabant in the 601 S version, in the most common sedan form of the second half of the 1980s. The set offers a well-worked interior and chassis and allows both the civilian and the police version of the car to be built. The box contains photo-etched metal parts and decals for several marking options.
The Trabant, popularly the Trabi, was a small passenger car built in the former German Democratic Republic. The 601 model was produced without fundamental changes for more than 25 years and, with production of over 2.8 million cars, it became the most widespread car in East Germany and one of the symbols of the Eastern Bloc and of its fall after 1989. Characteristic features were the unitary body with Duroplast panels, the small two-stroke engine and the simple but practical design that turned the Trabant into a cult reminder of the era of socialist Germany.
Glue the parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic and the fine photo-etched items with super glue. Smooth the body carefully before painting and apply a primer. For a period-faithful look, flatter to semi-gloss shades work well; on restored cars, by contrast, a gloss finish sprayed with an airbrush over a smooth base and lightly polished looks best. Pick out the chrome trim, frames and bumpers separately (with an undercoat for chrome or a polished silver). Work up and paint the interior before closing up the body. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat and seal them with a clear coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
