Border Model 1:350 the Japanese parallel world battleship Yamato 1965 is an extensive plastic kit of a fictional, alternate-history form of the battleship Yamato, that is of an upgraded ship from a what-if scenario set in 1965, not of a historical vessel.

A large plastic kit of the battleship Yamato in 1:350 scale from Border Model. Take note: this is not the historical ship. The boxing presents a fictional, alternate-history version set in 1965, that is an idea of how the Yamato might have looked after a deep postwar modernization in a world where she had survived and gone on serving. The stern and the deck are therefore completely reworked, and there is a new mast with a search radar, launchers for anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles, new anti-aircraft armament, depth charge throwers and a 3D printed helicopter. The hull is split and the finished model is roughly 75 cm long.
The actual Yamato was the flagship of the Imperial Japanese Navy and, together with her sister Musashi, the largest battleship ever built, with a main armament of 460 mm. She entered service at the turn of 1941 and 1942 and was sunk in the spring of 1945 during the suicide operation to Okinawa. The real ship therefore never lived to see 1965. This boxing works with alternate history: it builds on the silhouette of the Yamato but adds missile armament, modern sensors and a flight area for a helicopter. Both the configuration and its dating are fictional, so take the model as a what-if subject in its own right, not as documentation of an existing vessel.
With a split hull it is crucial to bond the two parts precisely and without twisting: glue in sections, check the fit on a flat board, and once it has dried, fill and sand the joint. Finish the decks and the superstructures as subassemblies and glue them on only once they are painted, as getting a brush or an airbrush between finished superstructures is all but impossible. If you reach for etched railings and ladders, bend them on a metal rail and glue them with super glue in small sections, ideally right at the end. Start the painting with a primer, then the base gray with an airbrush; a gentle lightening of the middle of the decks will give the large hull depth. For the finished model it is worth getting a firm stand or cradle and a display case: at a length of around 75 cm, handling the completed hull is the riskiest operation of the whole build.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
