About product

UMa Model 1:48 AV-8B Harrier II PLUS

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer UMa Model, a new brand for which the Harrier II Plus is one of the first items in the range. The kit rests on an entirely new tooling: fine scribed panel lines, riveting, clear parts, photo-etch, metal parts, painting masks and a rich decal sheet including instrument panels. Three marking options for US Marines machines are available, along with extensive armament (guided missiles, bombs, a gun pod, a targeting pod). The control surfaces and the main flaps can be built deflected and the refueling probe extended or retracted. The finished model has a span of roughly 19.5 cm and a length of about 30 cm, a compact model that fits into a display case easily.

The real subject

The AV-8B Harrier II is a STOVL aircraft: thanks to the vectoring nozzles of its engine it manages a vertical or very short takeoff and a vertical landing. That is its whole point: it can operate from the small decks of amphibious ships and from improvised surfaces with no conventional runway. The PLUS version differs from the basic AV-8B in having a radar in the nose, so the nose is markedly bulkier and, thanks to the radar, the aircraft also handles air combat with guided missiles. The Harrier was the backbone of US Marines attack aviation for decades.

Building and painting tips

Finish the cockpit and the landing gear bays before the fuselage is closed. Leave the vectoring nozzles movable, or glue them in a position according to whether you build the model in the flight or the vertical configuration, because it is the most striking detail of the whole model. Use the masks supplied; they save a great deal of work on the canopy. Spray the gray US Marines camouflage with an airbrush in thin coats; go over it with a gloss clear coat before the decals and even it out with a flat one at the end. Degrease the metal parts before gluing and glue them with super glue.

Who the model is for

  • Fans of vertical-takeoff aircraft and of US Marines aviation
  • Modelers who want a modern tooling instead of kits that are years old
  • Builders who will appreciate photo-etch, masks and metal parts straight out of the box
  • The slightly advanced, because thanks to the masks and the photo-etch the build is manageable even without great practice

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The PLUS version has a radar in the nose. The nose section is therefore markedly bulkier and, thanks to the radar, the aircraft also handles air combat with guided missiles; it is a difference visible at a glance.

The Harrier directs the thrust of its engine downwards through vectoring nozzles, which allows it a vertical or very short takeoff. The nozzles are separate parts, so you can build the model in the flight or the vertical configuration.

The span is roughly 19.5 cm and the length about 30 cm. The Harrier was a small aircraft by fighter standards, so even in 1:48 scale the model stays compact.

It is a new modeling brand. The Harrier II Plus is built on a newly made tooling with modern surface detail, and the package offers photo-etch, masks and metal parts; in content it is a full modern kit, not a limited short-run tooling.
