Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the British heavy bomber in 1:48 scale from HK Models. This is not an ordinary Lancaster - it is the B Mk.I Special version, that is, a machine specially modified to carry the ten-ton Grand Slam bomb. The package is based on the Lancaster from the same manufacturer but brings newly developed parts: a new nose, a modified bomb bay and the giant bomb itself. Photo-etched parts and decals are included as well. The dimensions of the finished model: a span of roughly 648 mm and a length of about 443 mm - it really is a giant piece, and that has to be counted on when planning a display cabinet and transport.
Grand Slam was the largest conventional bomb used in the Second World War - it weighed around ten tons (22000 pounds). It was a so-called earthquake bomb: it was not aimed directly at the target but landed beside it, penetrated deep into the ground and exploded there. The shock then undermined the foundations of a bridge, a viaduct or a concrete bunker and the structure collapsed by itself. It was first used in March 1945 against the railway viaduct at Bielefeld.
For a Lancaster to carry such a load, it had to be radically lightened. The B Mk.I Special machines lost the dorsal turret, the armament of the tail turret was reduced, the armor was removed (including the armored backrest of the pilot's seat) along with other equipment; they received more powerful engines and strengthened landing gear. The key change is the bomb bay: the doors were removed altogether and the opening was faired over, because the bomb did not fit inside completely - it protruded out. That is exactly why this Lancaster looks different at first glance from an ordinary bomber. They were flown by the famous No. 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force.
Glue with thin plastic cement and support the large wing surfaces while they dry so that no sag forms. Finish the interior and the modified bomb bay before joining the fuselage; the bomb is the dominant feature of the model and deserves separate attention (primer, a smooth surface, fine emphasis of the rivets). Paint with an airbrush: the standard night camouflage of British Bomber Command, decals onto gloss varnish and a matte coat at the end. The finished model is heavy and large - prepare a sufficiently solid base and handle it by the fuselage, not by the wingtips.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
