A 3D printed set of balance weights for the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in 1:48 scale from the brand 3DF. It is NOT an aircraft kit — these are small replacement parts with which you replace the corresponding plastic pieces in your model. Watch the scale: this set is for 1:48. The same product also exists in the smaller 1:72 scale and the parts are not interchangeable, because they differ in size.
The Bf 109 carried small heavy weights on thin arms on its control surfaces — typically on the ailerons — which stand clearly out from the surface. They are not decoration: they serve for the aerodynamic and mass balancing of the control surface. A balanced surface is more resistant to dangerous oscillation (flutter) at higher speeds and the forces the pilot has to overcome on the stick stay manageable.
For the modeler this is what matters: they are thin, small and protruding elements. For technological reasons injection-molded plastic makes them thick, soft and blunt — and some kits do not have them at all. Yet they are clearly visible on a finished model and belong among the characteristic features of the Bf 109 silhouette. 3D printing is built for exactly this job: it manages a sharp edge and a thin arm that simply will not come out of a mold.
Material from 3D printing does not react to cement for polystyrene — the joint would not hold. Reach for cyanoacrylate, or epoxy on joints under load. Wash the parts before painting in lukewarm water with detergent, so no residues of print resin stay on the surface and the paint holds. Sand them wet and do not inhale the dust — it is harmful to health. Given how delicate the parts are, glue them on at the end of the build, after the surrounding areas are clear coated, so you do not break them off.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package. The form of the balance weights differs between individual versions of the Bf 109 — before buying, please check that the set matches the version and the kit you are building.
