About product

The Hellcat Mk.I in British carrier service, 1:48

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American carrier fighter in the form in which it served with the British Fleet Air Arm under the designation Hellcat Mk.I. The kit holds around 117 parts including six clear ones, engraved surface texture with rivet detail suggested, a well worked-out cockpit with an instrument panel and a broken-up landing gear.

The real subject

The Hellcat was an American carrier fighter built around a massive air-cooled twin-row radial engine. It was large, heavy and rugged, with a roomy wing and a good view from a high-set cockpit. It was exactly this ruggedness and easy handling that made it a machine which even less experienced pilots could cope with. The British received it under deliveries from the United States and flew it from the decks of escort carriers, among other places in the North Atlantic and off the Norwegian coast.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the cockpit before you close the fuselage. The radial engine comes into its own when an ignition harness of thin wire is added behind the cylinders. British naval schemes are made up of several close gray-blue shades with soft transitions, which you will manage best at low pressure and close range. Leave the folding wings in the basic position unless you are sure of the accuracy of the joint.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of carrier fighters of the Second World War.
  • Anyone interested in the British Fleet Air Arm.
  • Modelers looking for a straightforward build in 1:48 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
