About product

The CH-34 US Army Rescue in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter

The model captures one of the best-known piston-engined helicopters of the nineteen fifties and sixties in the version operated by the American army for rescue and liaison duties. It is a classic plastic kit in 1:48 scale, that is at a size where the cabin, the rotor head and the inside of the fuselage can all be worked out well. The instructions enclosed with the kit give the contents of the package and the number of parts.

The real subject

The Sikorsky H-34 followed the proven layout with a radial piston engine housed in the nose. The engine drove the rotor above the cabin through a long driveshaft, so the cargo space in the middle of the fuselage stayed free. It was precisely the roomy cabin, the load capacity and the easy maintenance that made the type a universal machine for transport, liaison and rescue duties. In the American army it served under the name Choctaw, and after the designations were unified in 1962 the designation CH-34 became established for these machines. The rescue form was fitted with equipment for lifting people out of difficult ground.

Building and painting tips

Start with the interior of the cabin and the cargo space, because once the fuselage is glued there will be no access to it. Fit the glazing only after painting and glue it with a clear glue that does not fog the plastic. Mask the glazing frames, as on a helicopter they are a prominent feature. Leave the rotor blades slightly drooping when you fit them, so that the machine looks natural even standing still. Even the surface out with a base coat, apply the decals over a gloss coat and cover them with a matte one. Keep the weathering restrained: a light wash on the panels, a darker one around the exhausts and on the underside of the fuselage, where oil and dust collect.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of helicopters in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers interested in the piston era of aviation
  • Builders of dioramas on rescue themes
  • Modelers with ordinary experience of building aircraft

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
