About product

DB-7B Boston III, 1:48 — HK Models special edition

A modern injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from HK Models. This is a special limited edition that adds further material beyond the plastic: photo-etched parts, white metal parts (landing gear legs and nose weight to keep the model from sitting on its tail), masks for the glazing and well-printed decals for two machines — an RAF aircraft of No. 88 Squadron and an American DB-7B of the 15th Bombardment Squadron, USAAF, both flying from Britain in the summer of 1942. More than 250 parts in total give a detailed pilot's cockpit, bombardier's station, radio operator's position and rear defensive gun position, an openable bomb bay with bombs, movable control surfaces and alternative glazing. The finished model has a span of roughly 39 cm.

The real subject

The Douglas DB-7 is an American twin-engine light to medium bomber, known in the United States as the A-20 Havoc. The designation Boston is British — and the DB-7B Boston III is specifically the version delivered to the Royal Air Force. The aircraft was marked by its nose gear, good speed and excellent handling; the RAF sent it on daylight attacks from low and medium altitude against targets in occupied Europe, and later on smoke-laying sorties as well. The Boston III differed from the early versions in, among other things, larger tanks and armor that came out of combat experience.

Building and painting tips

Glue with liquid cement for plastic; the white metal parts, by contrast, should be bonded with super glue and degreased beforehand. Do not forget the nose weight — on an aircraft with a nose wheel this is essential, otherwise the model will sit down on its tail. Finish and paint the interior and the bomb bay before closing up the fuselage. Apply a primer before painting, spray the camouflage with an airbrush and use the masks supplied for the glazing. Lay a gloss clear coat under the decals and a matte one over it once dry; the engraved panel lines come out beautifully once a darker weathering color is drawn into them.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers who want a modern, richly equipped kit in a special edition
  • For collectors of RAF aircraft and Allied Second World War bombers
  • For those who enjoy building interiors and open bomb bays
  • For more advanced builders — the combination of plastic, photo-etch and white metal calls for experience

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a limited release that, besides the plastic, also contains photo-etched parts, white metal parts (landing gear legs and a nose weight) and masks for the glazing. The exact contents can differ between deliveries, so go by what the manufacturer states on the box.

It is the same family of Douglas aircraft. A-20 Havoc is the American designation, Boston the British one. The DB-7B Boston III is the version delivered to the RAF.

More for the advanced. The combination of plastic, photo-etch and white metal and the detailed interior call for experience and for super glue on the metal parts.

Yes, and in this box you get it ready in white metal. The aircraft has a nose wheel, so without ballast in the nose the finished model would settle onto its tail.
