About product

Dornier Do X (1:48, HPH Models)

A large resin kit of the giant Dornier Do X flying boat in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker of premium models HPH Models. It is a collector's kit from a series of top-end kits, a combination of fiberglass (FRP) and resin parts completed by photo-etched parts, masks and decals. Given the size of the real subject, this is a large and demanding project intended for experienced modelers.

The real subject

The Dornier Do X was a German giant transport flying boat of the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. At the time it came about it was the largest aircraft of its day: twelve engines arranged in tandem nacelles above the wing, a roomy luxury hull for dozens of passengers and a span that made the Do X a symbol of the ambitious era of the great flying boats. The machine was meant to demonstrate the possibility of regular transatlantic air transport and became famous for long-distance promotional flights.

Building and painting tips

Before gluing, wash all the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that the residue of the mold release agent from the casting is removed; otherwise neither the glue nor the paint will hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife and sand the surfaces; when sanding resin, protect your breathing (a respirator, wet sanding). Glue the parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), and larger joints can be reinforced with epoxy. Because of the size and the weight of the model, consider internal reinforcement and a stable base. Apply a primer suitable for resin before painting; spray the large surfaces of the hull and the wings with an airbrush for an even finish.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers with experience of building in resin
  • Collectors of large and unique aircraft models
  • Anyone interested in interwar flying boats and air transport
  • Followers of premium kits from the HPH Models brand

It is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a resin kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
