Academy 1:48 F-14D Tomcat — US Navy VF-2 Bounty Hunters is a plastic kit of the last and most modern version of the Tomcat with an adjustable wing sweep. The boxing brings new decals for the VF-2 squadron and photo-etched parts.

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from Academy, released as a separate boxing devoted to the VF-2 Bounty Hunters squadron. It is a newer release of a proven Academy tooling: in the package you will find photo-etched parts, clear parts, armament and new decals for VF-2 machines — the markings are exactly what this release is about. The main appeal of the kit, though, is its movable variable-sweep wing: the model can be built with the wing spread (the landing and low-speed configuration) as well as swept back (fast flight), and the position can be changed even on the finished model. The cockpit, the landing gear and the engraved panel lines are all rendered in detail. In 1:48 the result is a solidly large model that takes up more room in a display case than one would expect, because of the spread wing.
The F-14 Tomcat was a carrier fighter of the US Navy with a variable-geometry wing: the sweep changes automatically in flight with the speed. The D version is the last and most modern variant: it received new General Electric engines, digital avionics and extended capabilities against ground targets. The VF-2 Bounty Hunters squadron was among the units that operated the F-14D from carrier decks until the end of the service life of the type.
Finish the cockpit and the nose gear bay before you close the fuselage. Assemble the wing mechanism carefully and do not glue it up, or you lose the main charm of the model; when gluing the parts around it, watch where the thin cement runs. Spray the low-visibility gray US Navy schemes with an airbrush in thin coats and bring out the panel lines with a capillary paneliner. Overcoat with gloss varnish before the decals, and once they are dry unify the surface with a satin coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
